The department of Atmospheric was founded in 1971, which cultivated technological talents and backbones in the field of atmospheric science for the national economic construction, social development and national defense construction, and became the base for talent cultivation in the field of atmospheric science and scientific research. There are in total 16 faculty members, including 6 professors, 2 associate professors, 7 lecturers and 1 teaching assistant. The department owns the talent system cultivating from undergraduates to doctors. At present, there are 2 degree authorization points of masters on Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics and Atmospheric Environmental Science, and 1 degree authorization point of doctors on Meteorology. Educational goal: Students in this department are required to have solid foundation for math and physics, acquire the fundamentals of Atmospheric Dynamics and Atmospheric Physics, a higher level of English and more capability of computer science in order to do researches or operational work in the fields of atmospheric science and environmental protection. Major subjects: Calculus, differential equation, linear algebra, mathematical physics, calculation method, probability theory and mathematical statistics, general physics, theoretical mechanics, electromagnetism, introduction to earth science, atmospheric physics, fluid mechanics, fundamentals of atmospheric dynamics, weather science, numerical weather forecast, atmospheric detection, meteorological statistical forecast, modern climatology, fundamentals of computer science, computer programming language English, etc. Main major practice: Atmospheric detection, Weather Analysis and Forecasting, innovative training and scientific research training. The department emphasizes the teaching and the cultivation of scientific research ability and enables the outcomes of scientific researches to serve the economical development, which cultivated many young and middle-aged academic leaders. In recent years, faculty members undertook many national scientific research projects. The research directions were specified at global climate change and tropical monsoon, atmospheric environment, climate effects and their influence on regional ecology, climate change and water resources, prediction of meteorological hazards and hazard prevention and mitigation, etc. Wide domestic and international academic communication and cooperation were launched. There have been many nurturing disciplinary points since the foundation of this department, namely Yunnan University key discipline (2001), doctoral degree authorization point on Meteorology ( 2003), masters’ degree authorization point on Atmospheric Science (2003), Yunnan province key discipline (2007), Yunnan University high-quality curriculum (2008), Yunnan province Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (2009), Yunnan University excellent teacher (2009), Yunnan province high-quality curriculum (2010), Yunnan province excellent teacher (2010). In the department, there are 1 national outstanding teacher, 1 awarded China Youth Science and Technology Prize, 1 visiting scholar of “the light of the west”, 1 professional and technical personnel having outstanding contributions to Yunnan province, 1 Yunnan province excellent teacher, 2 awarded Yunnan province Hongyun Honghe Prize and 3 awarded Yunnan University Daguan Wu Outstanding Teachers’ Prize. The department has abundant facilities for teaching and scientific researches, such as Yunnan Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Southeast Asian Climate Research Center, Atmospheric Physics Laboratory, Atmospheric Environment Laboratory and Atmospheric Ozone Observatory. The Atmospheric Ozone Observatory, one of China's two Dobson Ozone Observatories, is the member of the WMO Global Ozone Observing System (No.209), and stores the total amount of Ozone since 1980 and the Umkehr vertical distribution data of Ozone. In 2010, the department bought the Brewer Spectrophotometer (No.198), the CIMAL Solar Radiation Observatory, Laboratory of Numerical Simulation of Atmospheric Circulation, VSAT Single Receiving Station, MODIS Satellite Ground Station, Meteorological Practice Station (Weather Consultation Video System), Ground Meteorological Automatic Observatory, Earth Science Laboratory, Internal and External Practice Bases (Chenggong, Kunming, Yuxi, Chuxiong). The department played an active role in co-cultivation with Yunnan Bureau of Meteorology, Sichuan Bureau of Meteorology, which made great contributions to talent cultivation in southwest China. Up till now, there have been refresher courses for postgraduate classes for 4 phases, which made significant achievements (15%). Furthermore, the department undertook the teaching of some part of the fundamental courses and specialized courses in Meteorological Training Center of Yunnan Bureau of Meteorology. Occupational directions for graduates: The graduating students became researchers or workers in different provincial meteorological, environment-protecting and educational departments and technical backbones in the army. |
