Andrew Manning,

The 16th International Seminar on Climate System and Climate ChangeISCS was successfully concluded at the School of Resource Environment and Earth Science in Yunnan University

Yunnan University     Zhou Tianyuehan

Sponsored by China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Co-organized by Beijing Climate Center (BCC), Yunnan University, and China Meteorological Administration Training Center, the Sixteenth International Seminar on Climate System and Climate Change (ISCS) was successfully concluded on July 26, 2019 at the School of Resource Environment and Earth Science in Yunnan University. Academician Qin Dahe of the China Meteorological Administration, Vice President Zha Li of Yunnan University, Deputy Director Gu Wanlong of the Yunnan Meteorological Bureau, and Deputy Director of the National Climate Center Chao Qingchen attended the opening ceremony.

Fifteen international students from 9 countries, as well as 162 young and middle-aged research personnel engaged in climate system-related research from 30 units in China, and undergraduates participated in the two-week training. Five internationally renowned experts from the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Japan and six senior domestic experts were invited to be the lead teachers of the workshop.

Mikiko Kainuma, Professor in Institute for Global Environmental Strategies of Japan, Lead Author of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Fourth and Fifth Assessment Report, and Special Report on 1.5°C, mainly engaged in climate change policies and adaptation. Professor Mikiko Kainuma mainly talked about policies to mitigate climate change, proposed a zero-carbon society scenario, compared the effects of temperature rise of 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius and the different schemes needed to control temperature rise, briefly introduced the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM), and gave examples to analyze the models adopted by Japan and China and discussed them. The project of carbon tax and deep decarburization (DDPP) was discussed, and the relationship between sustainable development and policy was discussed.

Daithi Stone, Professor in National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) of New Zealand, Lead Author, Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, mainly engaged in research of climate change detection and attribution.

Professr Daithi Stone introduced the attribution of climate change and its impacts, as well as the impacts of human activities on extreme weather and the potential and limitations of using attribution information.

Andrew Manning, Professor in UK University of East Anglia, mainly engaged in research of atmospheric chemistry. Professor Andrew Manning described the global atmosphere and ocean carbon cycle, the carbon source and sink effects and quantitative methods related to the emission of fossil fuels. He described in detail the process of carbon cycling in the ocean, such as carbon conversion, deposition and release.

Jeffrey A. Hicke, from USA, Associate Professor at Department of Geography, University of Idaho, Coordinating Lead Author, Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Working Group II, mainly engaged in research of climate change impact and carbon cycle.

Professor Jeffrey A. Hicke explored the effects of climate change mainly in terms of the Earth's ecosystem. He elaborated on the driving factors of terrestrial ecosystem change and the prediction of global carbon cycle and future carbon cycle, and further quantified strategies for mitigating climate change and their impacts on ecosystems.

Anna Victoria Maidens, Senior Researcher in UK Met Office Hadley Centre, mainly engaged in research of global climate system and climate prediction. Professor Anna Maidens explained the comparison between some models of seasonal forecasting and forecasting systems, the relationship between seasonal forecasting and North Atlantic Oscillation and Arctic Oscillation, and the impact of stratosphere on surface climate and the analysis of real-time observations.

At the closing ceremony, representatives of the various groups sent representatives to report in English, showing the two-week learning experience and harvest results. Twenty-five Chinese and foreign students won the title of outstanding students.

The dean Tan Shucheng of the School of Resource Environment and Earth Science in Yunnan University became the closing speech of everyone. At the same time, President Tan Shucheng and the director Yang Ruowen of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, jointly issued certificates for outstanding students and took photos with them.

ISCS aims to expand the perspectives of young scientists, achieve international frontiers in climate change, enhance climate research capabilities, strengthen international academic exchanges, and demonstrate the latest frontiers of climate change science. Through this event, the world is called upon to take active actions and effective measures to limit climate change, thus creating a more prosperous and sustainable future world.
